The newly formed viruses appear like buds on the cell surface before breaking free, leaving a dead cell behind them. They are carried away in the blood or migrate into organs to infect further CD4 cells, and repeat the fateful cycle. This explains why more and more viruses are produced in HIV infection, the CD4 cells population declines, normal immunity gradually weakens and the patient becomes steadily sicker.
