The first drugs to be developed were inhibitors of reverse transcriptase. They stop the viral genetic material from being translated into the language of human genetic material. In other words, they stop the virus from downloading itself into CD4 cell and reprogramming it. Deprived of its secret weapon, viral RNA stands alone and is unable to outwit the CD4 cell. |
