When a disease agent
invades a healthy person, as in flu for example, our immune system raises
a shield of defensive responses that eliminate the intruder in a few days
or weeks. In phase 1 HIV infection, on the other hand, the immune system
cannot eliminate the intruder, but the shield is still intact and the immune
system succeeds in containing the virus.
